Harness the Power of RAW

Shooting and Editing RAW Files

Using a camera that has the ability to shoot in a raw format (the majority of DSLRs and some high end compact cameras) you will really maximise the quality of your photography by editing the RAW files in Lightroom. I’ve heard many times from photographers that they’re concerned about shooting RAW and will shoot using the JPEG format the majority of the time. There really is no need to be afraid and you could be missing out on some incredible results by not shooting in RAW.

Additionally, with RAW converters being improved all the time, shooting in RAW gives to the ability to have your original files reinterpreted as new RAW converters are released, squeezing every last bit of quality out of your original image.

Above is an image that I took when out walking on Ashdown Forest in January. I have to admit, I didn’t really spend much time editing it, but you can see the difference that a few minutes worth of tweaks in Lightroom can make to the original RAW file, bringing out the colour and detail and adding drama to the shot.

Would it then surprise you to know that this shot was taken on a compact camera in programmed automatic mode? Such is the power of shooting RAW files.
